Radiation Shielding Requirements for Lead-Lined Wood Doors
Per NCRP Reports #49 and #147 and Other Radiation, Health, and Safety Codes
- All lead-lined doors, vision lites, X-ray glass, lead-lined frames, and lead-backed drywall must meet or exceed the shielding value specified by the project physicist or qualified expert. Customers must confirm required lead thickness before ordering.
- Doors must have internal lead shielding that covers the full height and width.
- To prevent radiation leakage, the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor should be as small as possible. If the gap is 1 inch (2.5 cm) or more, a lead threshold or lead-lined door sweep is required.
- Lockset hardware should be lead-lined if the shielding exceeds 1/16" thick or if specified.
- Any lead glass in a shielded door must be X-ray safety glass, permanently labeled to meet ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Category 2 impact resistance standards.
- Door must have an interlock switch so that the X-ray machine cannot be activated when door is open or ajar.
- An illuminated "X-Ray On" sign over the door entrance is recommended to prevent accidental entry during X-ray procedures. The light should be tied to the machine so it turns on during X-ray machine activation.
- Fire-rated partitions must use UL-classified lead-backed drywall, like Ray-Bar RB-LBG, with at least a 1/2" overlap into the door frame to block radiation and meet fire codes.
Note: X-ray safety glass is not a "tempered" product and is available from Ray-Bar
Lead lined solid core wood doors are also available with Ray-Bar Lead Lined Vision Frames or Lead Lined Light Proof Louvers.
